Why Mindfulness is a Game-Changer for Physicians
May 10, 2023If you're a physician or healthcare provider, you know that a career in the healthcare industry is beyond demanding. Long hours, high-stress situations, and a constant stream of patients can take a toll on your mental and emotional well-being. That's why I want to talk to you today about the incredible benefits of mindfulness.
A study published in the Journal of General Internal Medicine found that mindfulness-based stress reduction can significantly improve burnout and resilience in primary care physicians. Imagine being able to handle stressful situations with ease and to maintain a positive outlook in the face of adversity. That's the power of mindfulness!
But that's not all. Another study published in the Journal of Occupational Health Psychology found that mindfulness-based interventions can reduce emotional exhaustion and increase job satisfaction among healthcare workers. When you're feeling energized and fulfilled in your work, you'll be able to give your patients the best possible care.
In fact, research shows that mindfulness can even improve patient satisfaction ratings. A study published in the Annals of Family Medicine found that physicians who underwent mindfulness training showed increased empathy and decreased burnout, resulting in improved patient care. When you're able to connect with your patients on a deeper level, you'll be able to provide more personalized care that truly makes a difference in their lives.
Imagine feeling:
- Centered
- Present
- Calm and in control of your emotions and thoughts
- Confident
- Open
That is the power and mindfulness.
So if you're feeling overwhelmed or burnt out, I strongly encourage you to consider incorporating mindfulness into your daily routine. Whether it's through apps, books, or mindfulness-based stress reduction programs, there are plenty of resources available to help you get started.
Mindfulness doesn’t have to be in a full meditation pose, in a quiet room, by yourself with your eyes closed. You can do it right at work!
Quick Clinic Mindfulness Technique:
- Take 10 seconds to focus on your breathing 4 times a day- lunch break, between patients, during charting, between cases etc.
- Focus on the inhale and exhale
- You could be in a room by yourself or with other folks. Eyes open or closed.
- By bringing singular awareness to your breath, you are working your mindfulness muscle.
- You are also giving yourself a brain break.
- Notice how you feel after doing this exercise. My guess would be a bit more calm, centered, and focused!
Remember, taking care of yourself is just as important as taking care of your patients. By prioritizing your own well-being, you'll be able to provide even better care to those who need it most.
#dosomethingdaily for yourself to make steps towards a healthier and more-fulfilled you.
