Learn Bravery, Not Perfection
Jul 05, 2023As women in healthcare, we have undoubtedly experienced the pressure to conform to predefined paths throughout our training and careers. From the earliest stages of our education to the time we become trainees, the expectations placed upon us often dictate the choices we make. But what happens when we complete our training? How do we navigate the challenges and carve our own unique paths?
Recently, I had a conversation with one of my coaching clients, and the theme that emerged was the importance of "breaking away" from the pack. As women, we frequently find ourselves caught in a web of societal expectations, feeling the need to fit into molds that may not align with our true aspirations. We tend to take on more projects and say "yes" to everything, even if it means sacrificing our own priorities.
In light of this, I was reminded of an inspiring TED Talk by Reshma Saujani that left a lasting impact on me and how I parent. Her talk revolves around the concept of "Learn Bravery, Not Perfection." Saujani, an advocate for women in technology, encourages us to embrace courage rather than constantly striving for flawlessness. (give link to talk)
The key takeaway from her talk is that by focusing on bravery, we liberate ourselves from the constraints of perfectionism. As women in medicine, we may feel compelled to excel in every aspect of our lives, but in doing so, we risk neglecting our own well-being and authenticity. Embracing bravery allows us to step outside the predetermined paths and challenge the status quo. It enables us to define success on our own terms, embracing our unique strengths and passions.
How can we use this in our clinical lives?
- Prioritize your vision for yourself. Learn when to say, “no thank you”.
- Create a wellness vision for your health, well-being, and your life outside of medicine.
- Imagine what life would be like if you could have your “dream” career. What would that look like for you? And how can we make this a reality?
- Start making small goals each week that align with your vision and dream.
Let us continue to inspire and uplift one another, celebrating the strength and courage that reside within us.
