Declining life expectancy in the US?
Sep 06, 2023That’s right & surprising!
Between 2019 and 2020, the United States experienced a significant decline in life expectancy, with an average reduction of 1.87 years. Interestingly, when compared to other high-income countries, these findings showed a notably smaller decrease in life expectancy, averaging at 0.58 years across all 21 nations. This truly emphasizes the impact of our lifestyle on our health, wellness, and longevity.
Now, let's explore four lifestyle habits to consider on your journey (or the journey of your patients) towards wellness and longevity, inspired by research from the Blue Zones – regions of the world with the longest and healthiest lifespans:
- Aim for 8-10K steps on as many days of the week as possible: The folks in the Blue Zones keep active by opting to walk instead of drive and engaging in yard work rather than long hours at a desk.
- Embrace a meaningful purpose: Having a clear motivation that gets you out of bed can actually extend your lifespan (up to seven years, in fact). While many of us have careers, it's worth pondering if they truly fulfill our purpose or "why." If not, let's have a conversation!
- Shift towards a plant-based diet with fewer meat products, and consider incorporating more beans.
- Make quality family time a priority and nurture a healthy social network.
