Boost Your Productivity with Time Blocking – Inside and Outside the Clinic!

Jun 28, 2023

As accomplished professionals, we often find ourselves juggling countless responsibilities and tasks, both within and outside the clinic. In our pursuit of balance and efficiency, I wanted to share a powerful technique called "time blocking" that can help you get more done in less time.

By strategically allocating your time, you can increase your productivity and reclaim control over your schedule.

So, let's dive in and explore tips on how to implement time blocking in your work and personal life:

Prioritize with Purpose:

Start by identifying your most important tasks and goals. Create a comprehensive to-do list for the day or week, considering both professional and personal commitments. Next, allocate specific time blocks for each task on your schedule. By dedicating focused time to high-priority activities, you'll ensure that you tackle them with undivided attention and increase your overall productivity.

I tend to overdo my list and then get upset with myself at the end of the day if I haven’t completed everything- even if it wasn’t possible in the first place!

For example, if you have research work to complete, block out a specific time slot during your day when you can solely focus on it. Similarly, allocate dedicated time for self-care, family, and other personal activities to maintain a healthy work-life balance.

Be specific! Specify how long you are going to do each activity and a firm stop time.

In clinic, block parts of your clinic day for consultations vs. in office procedures. You’ll notice less mental switching behind different patient encounters and more flow.

In surgery, consider blocking your day with routine surgeries vs. more complex or longer cases for the end of the day so you don’t feel a time crunch.

Protect Your Time:

While planning your schedule, it's crucial to protect your time blocks from interruptions and distractions. Communicate your availability to colleagues and staff, making it clear that you're not to be disturbed during designated time periods, except for emergencies. Turn off notifications on your devices or consider utilizing apps that temporarily block distractions to help you maintain your focus. I recently deleted my work email app so I don’t check work related emails at home!

Remember, maintaining firm boundaries and advocating for your time will not only enhance your productivity but also contribute to your overall well-being and reduce stress levels.

Flexibility and Adaptability:

While time blocking provides structure, it's important to remember that life can be unpredictable, especially in the medical field. Embrace the need for flexibility within your time blocks. Allow for buffer periods in your schedule to accommodate unforeseen circumstances or urgent patient needs. Additionally, periodically evaluate and adjust your time blocks as needed to optimize your productivity and ensure that you're making progress towards your goals.

By consciously managing your time in all aspects of life, you'll find yourself achieving a better work-life balance and experiencing greater fulfillment.

I hope these tips inspire you to embark on your time-blocking journey and empower you to be more productive and efficient in your professional and personal life. The key lies in taking control of your schedule and aligning your time with your priorities.

Remember, #dosomethingdaily for yourself to make steps towards a healthier and more-fulfilled you.
